Block Height

Category: infrastructure

The number of blocks that have been verified and added to the chain since the Genesis Block.

Block height is the standard way to measure the "age" and size of the blockchain. Since a new block is produced approximately every ten minutes, the current block height allows users to estimate how much time has elapsed since the network was launched.

Common Examples

  • Our node synchronization script monitors the block height to ensure our sovereign indexer is caught up to the latest network state.
  • The Bitcoin halving event is programmed to occur precisely every 210,000 blocks, meaning the block height is the master trigger for supply-side monetary policy.
