Toilet Clearance Codes (Water Closet Clearance)
Category: lifestyle
The legally mandated spatial clearances separating a toilet from adjacent walls, vanities, or fixtures.
The International Residential Code (IRC) states that a toilet must have a minimum of fifteen inches of clear space measured from its centerline to any side wall, vanity, or partition, along with a minimum of twenty-one inches of open clearance space directly in front of the bowl edge.
Common Examples
- The code inspector flagged the powder room layout because the custom vanity cabinet encroached on the required fifteen-inch toilet clearance line.
- Expanding the width of the water closet alcove to thirty-six inches provides a highly comfortable, non-cramped ergonomic environment.
