Uncoupling Membrane

Category: infrastructure

A geometric plastic underlayment sheet that isolates floor tiles from structural subfloor movement vectors.

Commonly known by trade brands like Ditra, an uncoupling membrane features an open grid core that accepts mortar. It allows the wooden subfloor to expand, shrink, and flex horizontally from seasonal changes without transferring those shear stresses onto the brittle tile layer above, entirely eliminating grout cracking.

Common Examples

  • We rolled out an uncoupling membrane over the plywood subfloor to guarantee our large-format stone floor tile installation wouldn’t crack over time.
  • Many high-performance uncoupling membranes also function as fully certified waterproof barrier systems when the seams are taped tight.
