Provenance
Category: legal
The documented, chronological ownership history of a work of art from its creation to the present day.
Provenance is the bedrock of art authenticity and value. A complete, verified provenance chain—including receipts, auction records, and exhibition catalogs—is mandatory to prove a work is not a forgery, a stolen asset, or a post-production reproduction. Gaps in provenance significantly depress market value.
Common Examples
- The gallery rejected the sale because the provenance had a ten-year gap during the WWII era, raising significant concerns about potential illicit looting.
- Every piece in our permanent collection carries a bulletproof provenance ledger verified by third-party international experts.
