AFCI Breaker (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter)

Category: infrastructure

A circuit breaker that detects dangerous electrical arcing signatures to prevent electrical house fires.

Unlike standard breakers that only trip during overloads or dead shorts, an AFCI breaker contains an advanced microprocessor that continuous-scans the electrical wave profile. It detects tiny, erratic sparking signatures caused by damaged wire insulation or loose outlet connections before the wire can spark a fire.

Common Examples

  • Upgrading the electrical panel to include AFCI breakers significantly lowered the structure’s baseline risk profile for interior wire fires.
  • An AFCI breaker will flag a trip if a vacuum cleaner cord contains micro-fractures inside its flexible rubber sheathing layer.
